Go forward in time to April 2011.
Do you live in the San Francisco Bay Area? You may want to go to John Robb's talk about self-funded open-source ventures. He's playing with ideas for projects that actually pay to the people who contribute, proportionally to the amount they contribute.
"And if you feel like picking a side, then order a side of bacon, because it is tasty."
My friend JoaquĆn pointed me to a 37signals talk about designing with Christopher Alexander's methods. It is a very nice introduction; the speaker talks about one of Alexander's older books and theories, and applies it to designing a web application.
I like one of the "take aways" from the talk:
A design is good when it fits the world, not when it meets a list of requirements or the latest trends.
