Much of Alexander's discussion refers to what he calls the “Quality without a name”.

Think of a Hobbit House, where everything is at hand, everything is comfortable, everything is lovingly made, and everything integrates perfectly with its environment.

The QWAN is alive, whole, comfortable, free, exact, egoless and eternal.

Alexander says that the Quality is objective and can be measured – but he wasn't sure how to do that yet.
