This is the definition of a System, according to Wikipedia (another commons of peer-to-peer gathered information).

Closed systems are not very interesting for our purposes.

Open systems take inputs from their surroundings, which have to pass through their outermost boundary, and they produce things which again go out of the system.

I'll talk about my activities and the related groups of people as Systems, and how Gnome could be made to interface with them for everyone's benefit.
