Go forward in time to January 2013.
The Battle for the Life and Beauty of the Earth: A Struggle Between Two World-Systems, Christopher Alexander's newest book, is just out. It describes the process of planning, designing, and building the Eishin School campus in Tokyo, while dealing with the Real World. I'm eagerly awaiting my copy of the book.
From the veritable "In the beginning was the command line":
Applications create possibilities for millions of credulous users, whereas OSes impose limitations on thousands of grumpy coders, and so OS-makers will forever be on the shit-list of anyone who counts for anything in the high-tech world.
And that was written in 1999. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
